The District's budget is the foundation upon which our policy work is built precisely because more than $2 billion is directed to services and supports for children and youth each year. DC Action for Children focuses its budget and legislative advocacy in five broad areas:
The cornerstone of DC ACT's budget work is the Budget Advocacy Project. The goals of the project are to share information about the budget and the process with the community, arm advocates with the skills they need to testify or take other actions on the budget, and inform elected and appointed officials about the impact of the budget on children, youth and their families. The BAP accomplishes it goals by:
- Producing an annual budget analysis, What's in it for kids?
- Publishing BANTA (Budget Advocacy News and TA) on an as-needed basis. BANTA includes information about the status of the budget, notices of budget cuts and increases and tools that can assist individuals and organizations in their advocacy efforts.
- Providing tools that can assist in advocacy efforts.
- Presenting testimony on the budget and budget-, accountability- and transparency-related proposals and legislation.
- Conducting trainings on each year's budget, generally in collaboration with other organizations such as Fair Budget Coalition.
- Participating in behind-the-scenes work on important issues such as transparency and accountability.
DC ACT's Executive Director Kate Sylvester supports the Budget Advocacy Project by testifying at public hearings, in media interviews and presenting at events.
The project is staffed by Susie Cambria, Deputy Director/Public Policy; Beth Jamieson, Public Policy Analyst; and Kirtana Kalavapudi, Public Policy Analyst.
